The Alchemist

You received an envelope in the mail, containing a note and a key. The note stated, that you have inherited an apartment from a distant relative. It felt like a hoax, so you tossed the envelope in a desk drawer. Months later in a family reunion the matter came up, and your grandparents told they had heard stories from a great uncle who had been a renowned scientist, but also somewhat a hermit and very much into alchemy – trying to transmutate lesser metals into gold. At some point he had grown distant from his siblings and had not been heard from ever since. Now you were curious.
